The Functional Skills qualification in ICT at Level 1 and 2 are ideal qualifications for learners wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in ICT in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. In this course, you will learn how to use the internet, emails, Microsoft Office software such as Word, Powerpoint and Excel – all of which are essential for current professional practices.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with ICT skills to help them gain the most from life, learning and work.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:

• gain skills when using ICT systems, finding and selecting information, developing, and presenting and communicating information
• apply their knowledge and understanding to everyday life
• engage competently and confidently with others
• solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations
• develop personally and professionally as positive citizens who can actively contribute to society.

There are no specific entry requirements set by the awarding body.

This qualification is assessed via 1 external assessment. The assessment will be split into 2 sections:

• in the first section the learner will fulfil requirements to use email and/or the internet
• in the second section, internet and email access will need to be closed down and learners will look at practical use and application of ICT.

3. How long is the course?

The typical duration of the courses are 15-20 weeks including the examinations. This may vary because of awarding body restrictions on when examinations can take place.

4. How are the courses assessed? Are there exams?

These courses are assessed externally – which means there are examinations. The examinations dates are arranged by us after the end of the course.

5. What happens if I fail the examination?

Sometimes learners fail an examination because of difficult personal circumstances and if needed, you are welcome to speak to our trained advisors confidentially about these and we can arrange for support where possible. We strongly advise learners to speak to our advisors about anything that may hamper your learning as soon as possible so we can arrange for support. That said, there are options for 1 re-sit for most qualifications free of charge.
